Careful, Stef! Badosa nearly loses her temper with Tsitsipas at the US Open
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are o
ne of the standout duos on the circuit, both on and off the court. However, their mixed doubles experience at this US Open was limited.
In their match against Mexicans Giuliana Olmos and Santiago González, the pair suffered a 7-6 (3), 6-4 defeat. But it wasn’t just the loss that caught attention—Tsitsipas nearly put their relationship to the test during a tense moment.
During the tiebreak in the first set, with their opponents leading 5-3 and close to taking the set, Tsitsipas couldn't contain his frustration after a backhand return went wide. In a fit of anger, he slammed his racket against the ground.
Badosa, meanwhile, was walking over to greet her partner, but her focus was on their opponents. She didn’t notice what Tsitsipas was about to do and narrowly avoided getting hit by the racket, though it gave her quite a scare.
After receiving a warning for the outburst, the set ultimately went to the Mexicans, who then won the match. As a result, "Tsitsidosa," as the couple is known, exited the last Grand Slam of the season in their debut.
Despite this, Badosa continues to find success in singles, overcoming past injuries to advance to the round of 16, where she'll face China's Yafan Wang with hopes of continuing her rise in the rankings.
The situation is different for Tsitsipas, who was knocked out in the first round by Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis (ranked 86th) in four sets. This defeat has added to the challenging period he's been facing and has led him to make the difficult decision to part ways with his father as his coach.
